To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing Horizon Studios have unveiled the first zero gravity space travel luggage ...
No longer confined to the pages of science fiction, space tourism is an emerging industry that has already taken its first customers into orbit. As we prepare for commercial flights to the moon and beyond, we must also prepare the luggage to get us there: Horizn ONE is a design study by Berlin-based company Horizn Studios and Alyssa Carson, the world’s youngest astronaut, to address the needs of the next generation of travel – to space.
As one would expect Horizn One is designed for zero gravity and therefore comes with a flexible ultralight carbon fiber shell reinforced with graphene to add strength and flexibility. An inbuilt smart screen in the suitcase has been designed to allow users to connect with their friends and family , while a biometric security function lets the user unlock the case with fingerprint recognition there is also a weird sounding ‘bacteriostatic technology’ which promises to keep clothes fresh. It also boasts an electromagnetic base that would allow it to attach to the floors or walls of the spacecraft to make storage and access more straightforward in zero gravity.
Features of the Horizn ONE space suitcase include:
º Graphene-enhanced carbon fiber structure, making it flexible, more robust and
lighter than any luggage developed so far.
º The case is estimated to weigh no more than 900 grams.Electromagnetic base,
allowing it to secure to the floor or walls of the spacecraft for easy access in zero
gravity.
º Extendable straps so the luggage can be carried as a backpack.
º Graphene supercapacitors and an inductive charging field also allow for highly
efficient energy storage and wireless charging of electronic devices.
º In-built smart screen to allow travellers to stay in touch and share experiences via
video with loved ones back on Earth.
º Biometric security allows users to unlock the case with fingerprint
recognition.Vacuum function for maximum storage efficiency.
º As space is a precious commodity on a spacecraft, the luggage can also be folded completely flat when empty to allow for easy storage.
º A silver-ion enhanced compartment provides a bacteriostatic function, neutralizing
germs and odour on the astronauts’ clothes.
Described as “luggage for generation space”, Horizn ONE will be the most advanced suitcase in the universe, currently it is still in the concept phase but the company is hoping to launch its first space range by 2030. Pre-order price tag of £40,000.
