The sale of Claude Monets " Meules" painting for $110.7 millions at a recent Sothebys auctions is the highest priced piece of works sold by the French artist.
As part of Monet's Meules (Haystacks" series the 1890 painting is one of only four works from Monet’s acclaimed “Haystacks” series to come to auction this century, and one of only eight examples remaining in private hands. There are a further 17 pieces which reside in museums around the world
The auction held in Sotheby's New Work attracted a lot of attention but took six bidders only eight minutes to reach the record sum of $110,747,000 shattering the previous highest price of $84.7 million paid for a Monet.
This sale is now the ninth most expensive painting ever to be sold at auction currently topped by Leonardo da Vinci's "Salvator Mundi," which sold for $450 million at Christie's in New York in 2017.
