WHAT A GREAT START TO THE F1 SEASON FOR HAMILTON & TEAM MERCEDES-AMG

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and his team Mercedes AMG F1 have been nominated for prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards.

Last year was a great year for both Lewis Hamilton & Mercedes F1, Lewis secured his fifth F1 world title in 2018, becoming only the third driver in the sport's history to achieve this, while Mercedes claimed its own fifth constructors' championship, continuing a winning streak that dates back to 2014 and in recognition of these achievements both Lewis Hamilton & Mercedes F1 have been nominated for or the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards.


The Laureus World Sports Award are awarded to sportsman who best demonstrate supreme athletic performance and achievement - such as consecutive or multiple world, continental, international or national and major championship titles or the establishment of world records or best performances. Lewis Hamilton was nominated for "Driving better than ever, Hamilton was the dominant force in Formula One, winning his fifth world title to move level with Fangio in the all-time list and just two behind Michael Schumacher. In the Mercedes AMG Petronas, he won 11 Grand Prix during the year. " Other contenders nominated this year are: Novak Djokovic, Lebron James, Eliud Kipchoge, FIFA World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe & Ballon d'Or winner Luca Modric.


In the team sector Mercedes F1 were nominated as a team that best demonstrates supreme performance and achievements - such as world, continental, international or national and major championship titles. "Mercedes F1 won their fifth straight Formula One Constructors World Championship, with Lewis Hamilton once again the drivers’ champion, ably supported by team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton won 11 of the 21 Grand Prix and the two had 13 pole positions."


The Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award is a trophy that has eluded Hamilton to date, however his rival Sebastian Vettel won one in 2014 after winning his fourth drivers' championship while F1 great, Michael Schumacher has two 2002, 2004.


The winners will be revealed at a ceremony in Monaco on February 19th 2019
